The Plain Local Schools Board of Education approved the the hiring of Matt Dennison as the next Head Varsity Football Coach at GlenOak High School during the December 22, 2025, board meeting.
Dennison brings more than 25 years of coaching experience to GlenOak, most recently serving as Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at Canton South High School. Over his career, Dennison has compiled a 191-83 overall record as a head coach at Canton South, New Philadelphia, and Claymont High School.
At Canton South, Dennison led the Wildcats to a 39-22 record, guided the program to PAC championships in 2022 and 2023, and helped secure the school’s first league titles since 1963. Under his leadership, Canton South qualified for the OHSAA state playoffs five consecutive seasons from 2021 through 2025, including a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2022 and a Regional Championship and State Final Four run in 2023.
His coaching excellence has been widely recognized, including being named PAC Coach of the Year, Stark County Coach of the Year, District Coach of the Year, Division IV State Coach of the Year, and the Cleveland Browns Don Shula Coach of the Year, all in 2023.
“Coach Dennison has built successful programs by focusing on discipline, relationships, and developing student-athletes,” said Superintendent Brent May. “We are excited about the leadership and vision he brings, and we believe he is the right person to move GlenOak football forward.”
Dennison shared his enthusiasm about the opportunity to lead the Golden Eagles.“I am excited for the opportunity to join GlenOak and lead the football program,” Dennison said. “It is a fantastic community with a rich academic and athletic tradition.”
Dennison went on to share, “We are excited to get to work and start preparing to compete for championships while developing quality young men. I am looking forward to competing in the Federal League and making the GlenOak community proud by the way we play the game and conduct ourselves. Go Eagles!”
